New VDL electric artic bus launched at UITP

New VDL electric artic bus launched at UITP New articulated electric bus will be a first for Germany.

VDL Bus & Coach held a world premiere for its new Citea SLFA electric articulated bus at UITP. The 18.1m bus is styled as a futuristic BRT design, and the model on display was the  first of eight buses ordered by the Cologne passenger transport company KVB (Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe). This electric articulated bus is fitted with an opportunity charging system.

The fast charge system is at either end of the route and uses a pantograph made by Schunk positioned above the second axle, so passengers have easy access near the doors. The charging power is 250 kW and charging time is around 5-10 minutes, with the batteries fully replenished on an overnight charge.

The contract  for eight buses for KVB means it will be the first operator in Germany to introduce electric mobility for an entire bus route.
